ONWARD began with the idea that new and contemporary photography should have a voice and space to grow and breathe. What started as an attempt to bring together photographers from Philadelphia and the surrounding areas has grown into an entity with national and international reach. One of our main focuses remains to exhibit emerging photographers’ work, but ONWARD goes further by fostering a photography community which facilitates the development of an active discourse surrounding photography.
Over the past three years we have had the opportunity to enlist the help of well known members of the photography community to jury each show. 2008, ONWARD’s first year, saw one of contemporary photography’s most important image-makers, Andrea Modica, make the selections. In 2009, Project Basho welcomed Peter Barberie, the Brodsky Curator of Photographs, Alfred Stieglitz Center, at the Philadelphia Museum of Art as the juror. Last year noted documentary photographer, Debbie Fleming Caffery – whose work can be found in the collections of the Smithsonian, MOMA, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Whitney and the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris – whittled the applicant pool from 418 entrants down to just 40 artists. For more information about last year’s competition, please visit the ONWARD ‘10 site and the ONWARD ‘10 online gallery of selected work.
As ONWARD continues to grow and expand internationally, we look forward to the involvement of photographers from across the globe. For more information about entering ONWARD ‘11, please visit the ‘About ONWARD’ page.
